A blog written by Shiloh Bignall & Kieyun Ffrench, students at the Lambeth Academy of London, following their one week’s work experience here at Breaking Blue in July, 2017.
Our initial expectation of work experience was hot offices, cubicles, lots of paperwork and water jugs! But at Breaking Blue it was the complete opposite – calm and relaxed and the staff were more helpful than we expected.
Working in this type of environment was quite an experience. On our first day we learnt a lot about Breaking Blue including what they do as well as everyday things such as how to operate software, how to access work email accounts and the intranet, as well as how to use the phone system and printers.
Over the week we were given set tasks to develop key skills. We did quite a lot of data entering as well as helping to organise travel itineraries for the researchers. We found these tasks challenging but it was good for us to demonstrate our attention to detail as well as ability to follow instruction and keep to a deadline.
Another task we got involved with was helping with the maintenance of the internal supplier database, which is in the process of being updated. We had to update records with contact details as well as ensuring all performance feedback was inputted onto the correct record. This task wasn’t particularly hard but it was time consuming and a bit fiddly as we had to select data from the old database and insert into the new database. However, we learnt how to identify which information went where and we learnt some great IT shortcuts!
Overall, working at Breaking Blue was a great experience for us. We really enjoyed the time that we had; not to mention the new skills we picked up during our week here. It was a great environment to experience office life as it allowed you to expand your industry knowledge as well as develop key skills.
The staff were really kind and the interior of the building was great – everything was really organised and the workstations were very comfortable – making you feel quite at home!
